Headline differences

Storefront, operations and development

Storefront and emails

Craft Commerce provides example storefront templates and a configurable email system. Your project turns those into the finished store and its messages. KahunaCart supplies storefront pages, a free theme and order and account email templates. See the storefront guide and email guide.

Licensing and project cost

Craft Commerce requires Craft Pro, so both licenses belong in the initial budget. Compare the prices below alongside hosting, storefront development and any extensions you need.

Administration API

Craft provides GraphQL, element APIs and storefront controller actions. A broader administration integration requires project-specific development. KahunaCart includes documented admin operations for products, orders, customers and payments, with permission checks.

Merchandising

KahunaCart lets staff order products, mark featured items and configure shop sections in the admin. Equivalent Craft workflows need project configuration or development. Gift cards, store credit, wishlists and reviews are included in KahunaCart and require extensions in Craft.

Shipping integrations

Craft stores can add live carrier rates through an extension. KahunaCart has a carrier integration interface but no included carrier driver, so live quotes remain a gap. Its configurable shipping rates do not replace a live carrier connection.

Bookings and rentals

KahunaCart's paid Bookings add-on handles appointments, shared staff and equipment, and classes. Add Rentals for nightly stays and seasonal rates. Craft also has booking options: the third-party Booked plugin integrates with Craft Commerce and supports appointments and capacity-limited events. Compare the specific scheduling rules your business needs as well as the license costs.

Platform, licensing & pricing 5 features
Platform, licensing & pricing: KahunaCart compared with 1 other platforms
Feature KahunaCart Craft
Perpetual licence, so the shop keeps working when updates lapse
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: In the box
Not a rental: a licence includes a year of updates, and renewing afterward is optional. If you let it lapse, the shop keeps running exactly as it is. You simply lose the ability to install new versions until you renew.
Host platform is free, with no separate licence on top of the commerce one
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Not available
Grav is free, so there is no CMS licence to buy alongside KahunaCart. Optional features such as Bookings and Rentals are separate paid add-ons; they do not require a paid edition of Grav.
Runs on ordinary shared PHP hosting
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Partial
KahunaCart needs nothing exotic: no queue server, no separate search server, and no extra runtime beyond ordinary PHP. It runs on the same shared hosting an ordinary Grav site runs on, with background tasks handled on a simple schedule rather than a constantly running process.
Zero-config datastore (SQLite or flat file) for a first store
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Not available
A first store needs no database setup at all, since it works out of the box with no server database required. Larger stores can move to a full database server later, and the underlying structure stays the same either way, so switching does not mean starting over.
Released in the last six months (as of August 2026)
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: In the box
KahunaCart is a first release. That is the honest caveat on everything else here: the feature set is wide, but there is not yet a long production track record behind it.
Cart & checkout 14 features
Cart & checkout: KahunaCart compared with 1 other platforms
Feature KahunaCart Craft
Cart and order are the same record in different states
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: In the box
A cart and the order it becomes are the same record, just at an earlier stage, so nothing gets copied or can disagree between the two. This also means an abandoned cart, a retried payment, and a payment link a merchant sends by hand are all handled the same simple way rather than needing separate systems.
Guest order converts to an account afterwards
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: In the box
A guest shopper is offered the chance to create an account on the receipt and in their order emails. That account is only created once the order actually completes, so a declined payment never leaves a half-created account behind.
Cart merge or adoption on login
KahunaCart: Partial Craft Commerce: In the box
KahunaCart deliberately does not merge carts. If a customer logs in with no items already in their session and exactly one unfinished cart on file, that cart is restored. It never combines two carts together and never touches a cart already in progress, since a silent merge could change a shopper's total without warning.
Multi-step checkout shipped and working
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Not available
A complete, working checkout is included. For physical products, it becomes a two step checkout once you have set up shipping zones, since a shipping cost cannot be calculated before an address is known, and the button always accurately describes what it will do next.
Declarative custom checkout fields with conditional logic
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: In the box
The checkout form is a list of fields you edit rather than a template you fork. Every field the checkout draws can be reordered, relabelled, required, hidden or switched off from the admin, and you can add your own: a VAT number, a delivery date, a purchase-order reference. Whether a field is required, whether it is hidden, and what counts as a valid answer are each written with the same rule builder you already use for sales and coupons, so "required when the billing country is in the EU and the customer is a company" is two conditions rather than code. An add-on can add a field the same way, and your edits to that field survive the add-on being switched off and back on. A value posted for a field the checkout is not currently showing is refused rather than quietly stored, so hiding a field really does hide it. Company name and a billing phone number ship as fields you switch on.
Shipping/tax estimate on the cart page before checkout
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: In the box
The shipping and tax estimate shown on the cart page is calculated the same way checkout will actually charge, so the number a shopper sees is not a rough guess. It only asks for a state or postcode when your shipping or tax setup actually needs that detail. One known limitation: if you use a payment provider that handles tax on your behalf, the cart page still shows your store's own local estimate rather than that provider's number.
Express pay (Apple Pay / Google Pay / one-click)
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Not available
The express-pay region is built into both the cart and the checkout page, and every button that goes in it is drawn to one published style contract, so two wallet buttons from two different providers can never sit at different heights or corner radii. The button itself comes from your payment provider. Stripe ships one, so a Stripe store gets Apple Pay and Google Pay in the region today; on the other gateways the region stays empty until that provider adds a button. Card details still never pass through KahunaCart, which is exactly why the button belongs to the provider rather than to the store.
Abandoned-cart capture
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Not available
A cart is recorded as abandoned once a shopper has reached checkout and provided an email address, rather than counting every visitor who merely added something to a cart and left.
Abandoned-cart recovery email
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Not available
One recovery email per abandoned cart, and optionally one reminder after a delay you choose. That is the whole feature: there is no third message, no campaign builder and no scheduling screen, because longer sequences belong in a marketing tool rather than in a shop. Both messages are switched off by default and stay off through an update, so upgrading KahunaCart never suddenly emails a backlog of old abandoned carts without you choosing to turn it on.
Recovery link that puts the abandoned cart back
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Partial
The recovery email carries a link that puts the whole cart back in one press, so a customer does not have to find nine items again. The link opens a page listing what would come back and what it costs today, and nothing is restored until the customer presses the button, because mail scanners and link previewers follow links in an inbox and would otherwise restore carts nobody asked for. Prices are today's prices: a cart abandoned in March and restored in June is priced as June prices it, and any line whose price has moved is called out by name. A line whose product has been deleted, unpublished or sold out is dropped with a note saying so and the rest of the cart still comes back. A cart counts as recovered once, however many times its link is opened, and you can revoke a single link without affecting any other link the store has sent. The same machinery gives you a share link for a cart you built with a customer over the phone: single-use, short-lived, and it can ask for the email address on the cart before it opens.
Deposits and part payment
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Partial
A customer can pay part of an order now and the rest later. Each order gets one payment collection holding a row per attempt, marked as the deposit, the balance or a refund. The order is not treated as paid until the balance clears, and it carries a part-paid status of its own that reports and add-ons read rather than working it out from the amounts. The balance is collected through the same pay link the order already has, so there is nothing new for a customer to learn, and a Collect balance action chases it with a message that says what the order comes to, what has been paid and what is left, recorded on the order so anyone can see it was sent. Refunding just the deposit is an ordinary refund against that collection, and a payment notification that arrives twice cannot take the money twice.
Minimum, maximum and pack-size quantities per product
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Partial
A product can set the smallest quantity one order may hold, the largest, and a pack size the quantity has to be a multiple of, so beer sells by the six and tiles by the box of ten. A variant can override any of the three, and a blank box means inherit rather than no limit. One per order is a single tick that wins over all of it. The minimum rounds up to the next multiple and the maximum down, so every number the shop prints is a quantity the store will actually sell, and the maximum comes down to the stock on hand for a variant that will not sell below zero. The quantity box on the product page and in the cart carries the numbers with a sentence saying the rule in words, and the same rule is checked again at add-to-cart, at the quantity box and at checkout, so a basket built before the rule existed is refused before money moves rather than after.
Quantity rules set on a category and inherited
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Unverified
The same three numbers sit on a category, and everything filed in it and in every category under it inherits them, so a wholesale department sold in sixes is three numbers typed once rather than three numbers typed on six hundred products. A product's own value overrides the category field by field, so a product with its own minimum in a category with a minimum and a maximum keeps its minimum and takes the category's maximum. Where a product is in two categories that disagree the stricter rule wins each field: the highest minimum, the lowest maximum, the largest pack size. One tick on a product takes it out of its categories' rules altogether, for the single-bottle sampler filed under a department sold in sixes.
Store-wide minimum and maximum order
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Unverified
Four settings say what the whole basket has to be: the fewest and the most items across every line, and the smallest and largest the order may come to in money. All four are off until you set them. The two money rules read the merchandise subtotal after discounts and before shipping and tax, so nobody reaches a minimum by paying for postage and nobody misses one because tax is added at the last step. A basket outside the rules is told so at the top of the cart page with the checkout button left where it was, and a shopper who walks past the sentence is refused at checkout with the same words. One tick takes a product out of all four, so a store with a fifty-pound minimum can still sell a twenty-five-pound gift card on its own.
Bookings & rentals 6 features
Bookings & rentals: KahunaCart compared with 1 other platforms
Feature KahunaCart Craft
Appointment booking with available time slots
KahunaCart: Official add-on Craft Commerce: Third-party
Book appointments through the Bookings add-on. Set service durations, opening hours, notice periods and buffers. Customers choose an available time and use the store checkout.
Shared staff and resource availability
KahunaCart: Official add-on Craft Commerce: Unverified
Bookings checks staff, rooms and equipment across services. A booking can require several resources at once, such as a therapist and a treatment room. Working hours, time off and capacity determine which slots are available.
Group sessions with limited places
KahunaCart: Official add-on Craft Commerce: Third-party
Bookings supports scheduled classes with a capacity for each session. Sell individual dates or a whole course, keep attendance registers and offer cancelled places to a waiting list.
Nightly accommodation with check-in and check-out dates
KahunaCart: Official add-on Craft Commerce: Unverified
The Rentals add-on requires Bookings. It adds a date-range picker, nightly stays, guest limits, minimum stays and arrival and departure rules. Sell a whole property or a pool of equivalent rooms through the existing checkout.
Seasonal rates for nightly stays
KahunaCart: Official add-on Craft Commerce: Unverified
Rentals supports date-based rate bands and weekend prices. Add extra-guest charges and a cleaning fee for each stay. The quoted price is held while the guest completes checkout.
Rental availability import and export through iCal
KahunaCart: Official add-on Craft Commerce: Unverified
Bookings and Rentals exchange availability with listing sites through iCal feeds. Channel exports omit guest details. Updates are periodic and can leave a double-booking window; this is not a real-time channel manager. See the sync limits.
Admin & reporting 11 features
Admin & reporting: KahunaCart compared with 1 other platforms
Feature KahunaCart Craft
Dashboard revenue widget
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: In the box
A revenue summary appears right on the main Grav dashboard, using the same data as the full reports. It only appears for admins with permission to see reports, and it automatically matches the colours of whichever admin theme you are using.
Reports with date ranges
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Partial
Six report types cover sales summary, products, customers, taxes, refunds and low stock, and you can run any of them over any date range with no limit on how far back you go. A fully refunded order is left out of revenue entirely, while a partially refunded order still shows its full total with the refunded amount shown separately, so you can see exactly what happened rather than a net figure that hides it. Very long ranges are grouped by month automatically so they stay easy to read, and reports stay fast even on a large order history. Each customer record also shows what that customer is worth: orders, lifetime total, average order value, first and last order, and where the last thing they bought was sent. Every one of those figures is worked out over exactly the same set of orders the lifetime total counts, so two numbers on the same screen can never disagree. The dashboard carries a cart-recovery rate over the same date range as everything else on it: carts mailed, carts recovered, the percentage, and what the recovered ones were worth.
CSV export of orders
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: In the box
Orders can be exported to CSV in two ways: one row per order, or one row per line item, so you get the level of detail you actually need. You choose and save which columns to include and in what order. There is a maximum number of rows per export, and if you go over it you are told clearly rather than getting a silently cut off file.
Bulk actions on products or orders
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: In the box
You can select several products at once and change one field on all of them together, and before anything is saved you can see exactly what will change. Orders can also be bulk updated, for example changing status on many at once, with each order processed and recorded individually so one failure will not affect the rest. There is a maximum number of items per action, and a selection of orders can also be invoiced together as a batch.
Granular permissions
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: In the box
Admin permissions are split into nine separate areas rather than one all or nothing role. Running sales promotions and holding payment settings are kept as separate permissions, for example, and processing a refund is separate from managing orders generally, since these are often different people's jobs.
Demo / read-only mode
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Not available
A read only mode blocks every change to the shop through the admin, including for the site's own super admins, which makes it safe to run a public demo store. It only affects the admin area. The storefront, checkout, and background processes carry on working normally.
Reset test data while keeping configuration
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: In the box
One command wipes the test orders and customers while keeping the catalogue, tax, shipping, coupons and every setting, which is exactly what most shops want right after launch. It prints every table it is about to empty with a row count and asks first, and it refuses on a store running as a public demo.
Installation doctor / status command
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Not available
A single command reports on the health of your installation, including the database setup, pending updates, background job counts, and what every connected payment provider actually supports. It is a quick way to answer questions like why a refund button is missing, without digging through settings.
Template-override drift reporting
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Not available
Every shipped template carries a version stamp, and the admin's Health screen and a CLI command list which of your theme's customised templates have fallen behind the version KahunaCart ships, and by how much. Overriding a template can otherwise silently lose features such as add-on panels; now there is a warning when it happens.
Comparison-period reporting with published metric definitions
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Not available
Any report can be set against the period before it or against the same period a year earlier, worked out in your store's own timezone so a day is the day your shop had rather than the day UTC had. Every figure on the screen carries a written definition you can read and argue with, so revenue means one stated thing rather than whatever the code happened to add up. Filters match all of your conditions or any of them, results break down by whichever dimension you pick, and the whole state of a report lives in the address bar, so a view you have set up is a link you can send to somebody.
Cost of goods and gross margin
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Not available
A product can carry what it cost you, and the cost of each line is frozen onto the order the same way its price is, so last year's margin is still last year's margin after you renegotiate with a supplier. Cost of goods, gross margin and margin rate then read as ordinary report figures beside revenue. The written definition is honest about the catch: if only some of your catalogue carries a cost, the margin reads higher than it really is, and the definition on the screen tells you so rather than leaving you to find out later.
API & AI 7 features
API & AI: KahunaCart compared with 1 other platforms
Feature KahunaCart Craft
Documented storefront JSON API
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: In the box
A documented JSON API sits under the storefront route beside the existing fragment responses, which are unchanged. It covers the cart and its line items, coupons, shipping quotes, payment methods, checkout, and the country and region lists, with conventional status codes and one error format throughout. Asking for a shipping quote before an address is set answers a clear error rather than an empty list of options, so a custom front end can tell a place the store does not ship to apart from an address it has not been given yet. An add-on can add its own keys to any documented response without forking anything. Building a fully custom or headless front end no longer means parsing page fragments.
Admin REST API
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Not available
A full admin REST API covers the same ground the admin screens do, and always checks the database is up to date before running, so it can never operate against outdated data. It is what makes external tools, automation and AI integrations possible without a separate system.
GraphQL
KahunaCart: Not available Craft Commerce: Partial
There is no GraphQL API. The existing admin API and AI tool set already cover most of the same ground, so a GraphQL layer is being considered as a future paid add-on for shops that specifically want one, rather than something every install would carry.
MCP tool manifest for AI agents
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Not available
KahunaCart ships a large, ready made set of tools that let AI agents manage the shop directly, covering admin actions, licences and subscriptions. Each tool respects the same permissions as a human admin user, and a small number of unauthenticated routes used for licence activation are deliberately left out of the AI tool set for safety. Separately, a public storefront MCP endpoint lets a shopper's own AI assistant search the catalog, answer policy questions and build a cart, seeing exactly what a logged-out visitor sees. It is off until the store turns it on.
`llms.txt` / machine-readable docs
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Not available
An llms.txt file indexes every documentation page with the line that says what it is for, and llms-full.txt carries all of those pages whole, so an AI tool can read either the map or the whole manual. Both are generated from the same documentation the shop ships with and are held to it by the test suite, so neither can drift out of date. An AGENTS.md file sits beside them describing how an agent runs a shop and works on the code.
Product feed for Google Merchant Center
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Third-party
The store builds a Google Merchant Center feed in the background, one row per variant a logged-out visitor could buy, in every language the site runs, with a supplemental feed that tells Google which items can be checked out inside its AI shopping features. An OpenAI product feed for ChatGPT is built from the same data and pushed by SFTP from a cron line. Brand, GTIN, MPN, condition and Google category are product fields, and the CSV importer reads them from WooCommerce and Shopify exports. Off until the store turns it on. See Product feeds.
Checkout inside an AI agent (Google UCP)
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Unverified
The store speaks the Universal Commerce Protocol, so Google AI Mode and Gemini can build a checkout with the store's own totals and pay with Google Pay through Stripe, without the buyer leaving the conversation. A cart an agent cannot pay for natively hands the buyer to the store's own checkout, and orders an agent placed are reported as agent sales. Members-only products are never offered, and the platform is sent signed order webhooks as the order ships, arrives or is refunded. Google Pay through other providers, PayPal included, is not built yet. Off until the store turns it on. See UCP checkout.
Notifications & emails 6 features
Notifications & emails: KahunaCart compared with 1 other platforms
Feature KahunaCart Craft
Transactional emails shipped and editable
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Not available
Sixteen order and account emails are included, each sent as both HTML and plain text, and every piece of text in them can be translated with no need to edit the templates themselves. Every message the store queues for a customer is also written to an email log, one row per message, listing the kind, the recipient, the subject, the order it was about, whether it was sent or failed, how many attempts it took and the transport's own words on the last failure. The row is written before the send, so a message that never left is visible rather than invisible, and a retry updates the same row instead of adding another. There is no open tracking, no tracking pixel and no click tracking anywhere in KahunaCart.
Merchant-facing on/off switch per email
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: In the box
The Notifications screen lists the sixteen emails and the store copy that is sent to the shop, each with its own on and off switch and its own template picker. Switching a message off queues no job at all, so an email a shop does not want costs nothing to leave behind. Point a message at your own pair of templates and the shipped pair stays underneath, so Restore shipped template is a button rather than a reinstall, and nothing on the screen can be deleted. An add-on registers its own messages into the same list, so everything a shop sends is managed in one place.
Email branding without editing a template
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Not available
You can set your brand colour, button colour and logo for order emails directly from the admin, without editing a template, and these are applied in a way that works even in email clients with limited style support. Deeper customisation, such as header layout, font choice or footer text, still requires editing a template.
Chat, webhook and phone push notifications to the merchant (Slack, Discord, Telegram, Pushover, ntfy)
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Not available
Set up channels once, with a Send test on each: email, Slack, Discord, Telegram, Pushover and ntfy for a phone, or a webhook of your own. Then tick, per message, where each one goes: a sale, a payment landing, a refund, a cancellation, and the problems you want woken up for, such as a declined payment, a provider that stops answering, a rejected webhook, a chargeback, stalled background jobs, low stock or a customer asking for a refund. Push messages carry a priority, so a chargeback rings a phone and a sale does not. Customer email addresses and postal addresses are never included in chat messages, by design, and a customer cannot use their own name to mass mention everyone in your Discord server.
Outbound store webhooks with HMAC signing
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Not available
KahunaCart can send outbound webhooks to your own systems when events happen, each one cryptographically signed so you can verify it really came from KahunaCart. If one of your endpoints is failing, only that endpoint is retried, so a single broken listener does not cause duplicate deliveries to your other, healthy ones.
Low-stock alerting
KahunaCart: In the box Craft Commerce: Not available
Low stock is reported in three places: a dedicated report, an admin panel and a notification. Checks run on a regular schedule rather than only at the moment of a sale, since stock levels can change in more places than checkout. The alert automatically clears once stock is replenished.

The other direction

Where Craft Commerce offers more

Craft supports inventory across locations, with stock transfers between them. KahunaCart keeps one stock count per variant. Multi-location stock requirements may determine the choice before other features matter.

Craft uses a shared rule engine across catalog pricing, discounts, shipping and tax. KahunaCart offers customer-group prices and quantity tiers, but its general rules and other pricing systems do not have the same combined scope.

Craft also includes VAT-number validation and supports several stores in one installation. KahunaCart does not currently offer either capability.

Craft's project configuration provides a more extensive code-managed deployment workflow. KahunaCart can export and import configuration with a preview and environment-variable references for secrets, but the two approaches are not equivalent.

Craft has a longer production history. KahunaCart is newer, which should be considered alongside the feature and price comparison.

Migrating

Planning a move from Craft Commerce

Export the catalog, customers and orders, then map the files to KahunaCart's CSV importer. Craft files require a saved column mapping. Preview the import before applying it and review any row-level errors.

Products and variants have close equivalents. Resolve generated product-code formulas to actual codes before export. Map custom fields individually to supported attributes, and check for category names repeated under different parents.

Recreate tax, shipping and discount settings with explicit checks for rules that have no equivalent. Customer groups can become KahunaCart groups with their own price lists.

Keep source exports for reference. Coupons and reviews are not supported by the importer, and custom product fields may need transformation rather than a direct mapping.

Questions

Common questions

Does Craft Commerce include storefront pages?

Craft supplies example templates for the cart, checkout and other storefront pages. The project configures and styles them into a finished store. KahunaCart supplies storefront pages and a free theme.

What licenses does Craft Commerce require?

The comparison includes both Craft Pro and Commerce. Review the pricing table for their initial cost and subsequent updates, alongside hosting and development.

Can I use Craft Commerce headlessly?

Craft provides product access through GraphQL and element APIs, with controller actions for cart operations. The broader commerce workflow requires project-specific integration rather than the same ready-made admin API supplied by KahunaCart.

Are gift cards, wishlists and reviews included?

Craft uses extensions for these features. KahunaCart includes gift cards, store credit, named shareable wishlists and moderated product reviews. Its store credit must cover the full order rather than being combined with a card.

How do customer quotes differ?

Craft supports editing an order and sending a payment link. KahunaCart has draft, sent, accepted, declined and expired quote states, with an online customer response and a deadline. Company accounts, purchase orders and credit terms are not included.

Do Craft Commerce licenses expire?

The installed software continues working without renewal. Renewal provides updates and support. KahunaCart uses the same general model.

Can I migrate a Craft store?

Products, customers and current orders can be mapped to KahunaCart's CSV importer. Review custom fields, category names and rules with no direct equivalent. The migration section explains the main limitations.

Explore KahunaCart before you decide.

Review the pricing and documentation against your store's requirements.
